Star Tsp100 Open Cash Drawer Command

Introduction

This application note explains how to open a cash drawer connected to the Star Printer through the Windows Command Prompt. These instructions apply for all Star Printers that support cash drawers.

Supported Printers: TSP100 Series, mC-Print Series, TSP650II, FVP10, TSP700II, TSP800II, TSP1000, SP700

Supported Interfaces: Serial, Parallel, USB

Applicable Environments: Windows 10 (32/64-bit), Windows 8 (32/64-bit), Windows 7 (32/64-bit)

Star Tools Needed (Serial/Parallel): None. The command is sent directly to the printer port.

Star Tools Needed (USB): Star Virtual Serial Port Driver

Connecting the Cash Drawer to the Printer

Locate the peripheral port on the back of the printer labeled as "DK".

Note: The above image shows the location of this port on the TSP700II. The location and appearance of other ports around the peripheral port may vary between Star Printers.

Attach the cash drawer cable to the "DK" port on the printer.

Serial / Parallel Connections

No Star driver is necessary to open the drawer from the Command Prompt when using a Serial or Parallel interface.

Ensure the printer is connected to the computer, and the cash drawer is connected to the printer.

Open the Command Prompt.

Windows 7/Vista: Click the Start button and type "cmd" in the search bar.

Windows XP: Click the Start button and select "Run". Type "cmd" and click "OK".

Type in the cash drawer command depending on the interface and press enter: Serial: echo Ctrl+G > COM#

Parallel: echo Ctrl+G > LPT#

Ctrl+G: Hold the Control key down on the keyboard and press the letter G

#: Designates the port number assigned to the printer

The cash drawer opens. If the drawer doesn't open, check all cables are properly connected and configured, and try a different port number (ex: COM2, instead of COM1).

Congratulations! You have successfully opened the cash drawer connected to your Star Printer from the Windows Command Prompt.

USB Connections

USB printers require a driver to be installed and do not support data sent directly to the port. Therefore, it is necessary to create a Virtual Serial Port when using a USB connection.

Ensure:

The printer is connected to the computer

The cash drawer is connected to the printer.

A Virtual Serial Port number has been assigned to the printer.

Open the Command Prompt.

Windows 7/Vista: Click the Start button and type "cmd" in the search bar.

Windows XP: Click the Start button and select "Run". Type "cmd" and click "OK".

Type in the cash drawer command: Serial: echo Ctrl+G > COM#

Ctrl+G: Hold the Control key down on the keyboard and press the letter G

#: Designates the port number assigned to the printer by the Virtual Serial Port utility

The cash drawer opens. If the drawer doesn't open, check all cables are properly connected and configured. Try deleting the current Virtual Serial Port number and recreating it with a different port number (ex: COM2, instead of COM1); then reattempt to send the command.
